Pass it on

Someone sent you this link. You don’t need to have bought anything to use this page. Many women are told it’s stress, or that they’re too young for what’s actually happening. If that sounds like someone you know, this is for her too.

What to say when you call

Read this before you dial, or keep it open while you’re on hold.

  1. “Hi, I’d like to book an appointment with a GP, please.”
  2. “Could I have a longer appointment? I’ve got a few things to go through, not just one quick thing.”
  3. “I’d also like to ask about the Medicare menopause health assessment, item 695. Could you check whether I’m eligible?”
  4. “Is there a GP at the practice with extra training in menopause? If not, that’s fine, I’ll see whoever’s available.”
  5. “Should I bring or send anything ahead of time, like a symptom list?”
  6. “What’s the earliest appointment you have?”
  7. “Thanks. Can I get a text or email confirmation?”

The Feminesis Doctor Kit has the full list of questions for inside the appointment. This script is just for the phone call.

Where to find a doctor

Three places to start, if you don’t already have someone.

AMS Find a Member

The Australasian Menopause Society’s free directory of doctors and health professionals with a special interest in menopause.

Search Find a Member at menopause.org.au

healthdirect

A government service finder. Search by postcode and filter for GPs near you.

healthdirect.gov.au

1800MEDICARE

If you’re not sure where to start, call 1800 633 422 and ask what’s available near you.

None of these guarantee a particular doctor or outcome. They’re places to start.

Before you go

  • Track how you’re feeling for a few weeks first, four if you can. A plain notebook is fine.
  • Write your questions down and bring a printed or saved copy.
  • Ask for a longer appointment when you book, not the standard length.
  • If you’ve already written anything down, hand it over. It’s easier than saying it out loud.

The Transition Letter

One Australian fact, one real story, one thing to do. Once a month. The first letter goes out in October.
